Background

The Adanac Project is located in the core of the Abitibi, on a splay of the renowned Cadillac–Larder Lake Break. The project comprises 91 claims covering an area of 3,276 hectares. Three historical shafts are present on the property, two of which were used for small-scale gold production and one for advanced exploration. The property is named after the old Adanac mine located on the property, which produced an undisclosed quantity of gold ore in the 1930s.

Exploration results

Threegold has been active on the project since 2006 and has gradually developed a 3D model of the geology and zones of high mineral potential by integrating the data from earlier exploration work with the results from regional and detailed Mobile Metal Ion (MMITM) soil geochemistry surveys, a local geochemical Soil Gas Hydrocarbon (SGHTM) survey, and property-wide airborne geophysical aeromagnetic-electromagnetic coverage. This new 3D model has significantly improved our ability to trace known mineralization trends and help predict their extensions.

The new information was used to plan and execute a 4,474-metre, 22-hole diamond drill program on the project. Results from this program outlined a 1.8-kilometre gold corridor on the project and revealed much needed geological information in areas without any outcrops. Early in 2011, Abitibi Geophysics conducted a 3D hole-to-hole Induced Polarization survey to explore the off-hole potential and help establish priorities for Phase II of the drilling program, which is scheduled to begin in 2011.

Geology

The Adanac claims lie south of the Cadillac–Larder Lake Break at the transition between the Pontiac sedimentary rocks to the south and Timiskaming sedimentary rocks to the north, both part of the Pontiac Subprovince. Pontiac rocks are largely turbiditic greywackes and argillites with locally intercalated mafic to ultramafic volcanics. Timiskaming rocks are represented by a boulder conglomerate unit with subordinate beds of greywacke. The two groups are interpreted to be in sheared and transposed contact with each other. The area is structurally complex, with four phases of deformation mainly evident as prominent E-W isoclinal folding overprinting earlier broad folds. Later ENE- to NE-trending structures resulted in parasitic folding that affected the lithologies and quartz veins. Numerous dykes, ranging from felsic to intermediate composition, intruded the lithologies to form swarms or isolated bodies.

Mineralization

Mineralization appears restricted to shear zones where it forms well-defined traceable corridors cutting across the greywackes and argillites. The shear zones are laced with quartz veins and extensively mineralized with pyrrhotite and pyrite. Deformation caused the veins to be dismembered and boudinaged into convoluted centimetre-scale fragments. A sharp transition is observed in the east where alteration pervasively affected the sediments to form an extensive biotite-sericite-fuchsite-carbonate halo. Sulphide minerals in this area are dominantly pyrite and arsenopyrite, in marked contrast to the  mineralization in the shear zones.
